Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
