Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
