A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public works. They were executed at an accelerated pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
